reading revolution flickr 18460385_951866a6ef

On Sunday, I attended the Connecticut Book Awards, where my friend (and customer) Suzy Staubach was being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Suzy’s speech was very inspiring. As you know, there is much talk about the “demise” of the book and how little people are reading for pleasure.

Suzy has an elegant proposal that is simple to implement: Tell 3 Friends.

Tell 3 friends about the last book that you read.  And tell them to tell 3 friends about what *they* are reading.

Let children see you talking about books.

Those simple steps can help to encourage readers and to create new ones.

Now, I’m not going to take the easy way out and tell you about the book I just finished. Today, I’m going to make a point of telling 3 people in person — people who do not live their lives among books the way that I do. Maybe I can spark a new reader.

I hope you will do the same.

As Suzy says, “let the reading revolution begin.”

This is a great idea. I think I’ll do it with every book I read. I’d love to see celebrities do this in every interview they give. Get newcasters and talk show hosts to do it regularly, too!

What a great idea… I am constantly talking books with some friends, I’ll expand my sphere of discussion.
Currently the 11 and 13 year olds and I are fighting over whose turn it is to read Brinsinger, I love those sorts of fights. ;) :)

I’m kind of revolting, so I’m willing to join the revolution – and, just because I’m willing to go above and beyond… I’ll tell 5.

Hooray for you all. Thank you!

Kristen: I agree. Where are those celebrity readers? Besides Oprah, of course.

Katy c: Yes, those are the only kind of “good” fights I can think of.

donstuff: you’re hardly revolting, but if it makes you talk about books to more people, so be it. :)

“Tell 3 friends” is simple and elegant and brilliant. Rather than waiting for someone to ask me what I’m reading, I’ll volunteer the info. And, I love the idea of encouraging three friends to tell three friends what they’re reading. Thanks!
