pile of booksI’ve never been the kind of person who reads more than one book at a time, but lately, I’ve always got at least 2 or 3 books going. One’s   usually fiction, one’s non-fiction, one’s a graphic novel. Why have I started “reading around?”

My best guess is that my reading time has become so fragmented (it’s a very busy time at work, and we’ve got a lot of home improvement projects going on at home), that when I pick up a book, I’m looking for instant gratification. The book has to fit my mood and I’m not going to wait around for my mood to adapt to the book. I’ve intentionally started books from different genres so I’m more likely to have something to turn to, whatever I feel like. It’s working out okay for me now, but I’m looking forward to things calming down a bit, so I can settle back into my regular reading habits.

Do you read multiple books at once? Do you need to keep your genres separate or would you be able to follow two mysteries at once? Do you prefer to read many books at the same time or are you a “book monogamist?”

I’d love to hear your thoughts, either in the comments here or over at our Goodreads group. While you’re there, you can which books I’m reading now!

I used to be a one-at-a-time reader, but not anymore. There are just too many good books out there! I’ve usually got at least non-fiction going, one audiobook, and a couple of fiction.

I always have more than one book on the go. Usually I have one by the bed, one that I am reading on the train and another one that I am listening to.

I completely forgot that I’m also listening to an audio book… thanks for reminding me ladies… I’m currently listening to Girl With a Dragon Tattoo. It’s abridged, but I’m still enjoying it, partially because the reader pronounces the Swedish names so well!

This will shock you, but I probably have thirty partially-read books under my bed. I start books, read until I hit a spot where I decide if I want to go on or give up, and usually come back to the book at a later time.

I know, I know…not the way we were taught in school….

I am absolutely a multiple reader. I try to simultaneously juggle something for my book club, a book from my TBR pile and books that I’ve checked out from the library–both traditional fiction and graphic novels (the non-fiction is very rare). I think reading multiple books at the same time actually gives me a better reading experience–I’m comparing/contrasting author’s writing styles and skills as I go along.

I read multiple books as well. Usually one book is fiction and one book a biography. I tend to go for a mystery if I have had a hard day at the office as they really helps me relax and take my mind off the day.

I’m a book monogamist all the way! I read one book at a time, and then I usually change genres when I’m finished to keep things interesting. When I was in college and grad school, I could juggle books I was reading for English courses with a pleasure book, but I almost never read more than one book at a time. I just can’t do it without confusing details or forgetting important points.

If I am absolutely besotted with a book I carry it everywhere and don’t even make eye contact with another book. I remember when I read The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle, I felt like I took some his characters with me to the grocery store. (No, I’m not unhinged; anyone who’s read it will likely know what I mean.)

But currently I find that I’ve got a fiction book going on the nightstand (currently utter fluff — the newest Nicholas Sparks, which by extrapolation from my first sentence I’m not passionately in love with) and a nonfiction book to read at work on my lunch break when I’m not quite so tired (David Foster Wallace’s book of essays).

I read up to three at a time. It doesn’t matter what genre they are or if they are fiction or non-fiction. I buy books like some women buy shoes and have at least 50 books on my bookshelf that haven’t been read. I’m reading three at a time for selfish reasons. The minute I get through all 50 books means I get to go out and buy MORE books!

I almost always have more than one book going. I think I am just too impatient.

Me: I want to read THAT one.
Myself: But you’re already reading THIS one.
Me: I know, but I want to read THAT one!
    Myself: And THIS one…
Me: THAT ONE! I want to read thaaaat oooonnnne!

Apparently, my inner voice is two.

Dreamybee – It sounds like each of your inner voices needs their own book to read! ;)

Multiple books… and like others here, it’s about location. One stays in my backpack so I’ve always got something with me. Something on my nightstand. Something in the living room. And if there’s something that needs a lot of hard thinking and focus, at my desk.

Genre doesn’t matter, but size and weight do. Backpack book must be light. So must nightstand book… I know it’s time to turn off the lights when I drop the book on my face.

So I used to be a reader of at least 5 books at a time. I’ve changed toward the other end. I now only juggle two or three at the most at a time. A lot of the time, I focus in on one book. But sometimes I find that the one book might not be as great as I had expected and feel a need for other books to keep me going. Or, like you, I find myself in different moods. Usually the two to three books I’m reading are of different genres – especially like to keep one fiction and one non-fiction going for good variety.

Funny, I follow the exact same pattern – 3 books at once, one each of fiction, non-fiction and graphic novel/comic collection.

I’m amazed by all the multi-tasking. I’m no slouch — I’m chewing gun while I type this — but reading more than one book is too daunting. I like to immerse myself in an author’s style, plot and characters. I will read short stories or essays while I’m in the middle of a book, but such bite-sized pieces are much more manageable.
