What do you buy for a book-lover when you don’t want to give only a book? Michael gave you some suggestions a few days ago. Here are my recommendations:

Literary and Art themed Christmas ornaments, handmade by artist Gladys Boalt. When my husband and I were first married, we bought several of these at a local store, and added to our collection each year until the store closed. Each year our living room Christmas tree is decorated exclusively with these ornaments. My kids love the “Hey Diddle Diddle” series, my history-loving husband likes the “The Tudors” series. Me, I’m partial to all things bookish, so while I love our Mark Twain, I’m really lusting after Dickens, Shakespeare, and The Little Women series. They are heirloom quality, and priced accordingly — prices range from $40 to $110 and up.

Yep, it’s a blanket with sleeves — The Slanket. So your first reaction is “that’s stupid!” or “How is that different from wearing a bathrobe backwards?” And that was my first reaction, as well — until a friend made me try hers. Within 5 minutes, I was sold. This is the perfect gift for someone who is always cold, and who spends time in hobbies that require the use of your hands (reading, knitting, puzzles, drinking …). It’s wonderfully soft, and long enough to wrap under your feet. The neck is high, so you don’t get a draft, but loose enough that it doesn’t feel like a turtleneck. Just trust me on this one. In fact, if you’re even thinking about this, go order now, because they always sell out. My husband ordered mine last December and I finally got it in February. If that someone is very special, wrap it up along with a book — because I cannot think of a better gift than a warm blanket and a great book!

Gift someone this book clock, and suddenly it’s always time to read! It also comes in black, for a more sophisticated environment. And at just $27.99, it’s about the price of a hardcover.

Have other ideas? Leave them in the comments — we’re always on the lookout for fun book-themed gifts, even if we just buy them for ourselves.

Those ornaments are adorable! My hubby and I may have to start a collection of our own. The Slanket is also known as a Snuggie, for which there’s a hilarious infomercial that actually shows a family sitting outside around a fire, all snuggled warmly into their Snuggies. It does look ridiculous, but I’ll believe you that it’s awesome. And, I MUST have that clock. Great suggestions!
