I owe Steve Toltz an apology. I loved his book, A Fraction of the Whole, so much that I forgot to include it in my earlier list of favorite books of 2008.

The minute I finished his brilliant book, I declared it a favorite of the year. And I wrote about it, and talked about it, and browbeat my friends into reading it. And then I neglected to include it in the year end round-up.

This gives me the excuse to highlight it once again. If you like funny and quirky and offbeat and brilliant, you owe it to yourself. The book is now in paperback, so there’s no excuse.

I loved that book too. It’s so much better than the book it lost the Man Booker Prize to.

Amen! Fraction of the Whole was the best fiction I’ve read in years, and I’m glad you felt the same way.
