more books than FB friends

Random House has created a fun promotion for E.L. Doctorow’s new book Homer & Langley. The book is a fictionalized look at the "truth is stranger than fiction" Collyer Brothers. You can find out more about the real-life Collyer Brothers here, but suffice to say, they were packrats, amassing over 100 tons of "stuff," mostly books and newspapers, and it killed them. Random House has set up a Facebook group called "I have more books than Facebook Friends." They’re also running a contest. Take a picture of your literary clutter and you might win a signed, first edition of Homer & Langley. Full details here.

I definitely have way more books than FB friends. I am absolutely a literary hoarder and it’s beginning to be a problem. I’m running out of room and need to stop bringing books home. I’ve heard of folks who institute a "one book in, one book out" policy and I just may have to do that. Honestly, mine should probably be "one book in, four books out," but I can’t quite commit to that.

So, head on over and check out the group, snap a pic of your leaning towers of books and maybe you’ll win! While you’re over on Facebook, become a fan of Books on the Nightstand if you haven’t already!

    Sounds like a clever contest!

I cannot wait to read this book. I’ve been watching the series Hoarders on tv. I can’t imagine being a hoarder, but these people fascinate me.

Ha! I actually had a one book in, two books out policy (in order to weed through my personal library). My policy didn’t last very long!

  4. Suzanne says:

All I have to say is that my husband better not ever complain again about how many books I have!

One way to trim clutter is to actually move! Two years ago, I moved from Washington DC (where I had grown up) to Southern Oregon. During my lifetime I had amassed an enormous number of books and we simply could not afford to move all my stacks. My local library received crates of books and audiobooks in donation. When people ask that discussion topic of “What book would you take to a desert island?” I can fully empathize!
