It’s our 100th episode! We announce the return of the Books on the Nightstand Book Index; we look at every 100th book we’ve covered here at BOTNS; and we share with you some of our less-than-stellar moments. I think it’s a fun episode … enjoy! If you are getting this via email or RSS reader, please click through to the website where you can listen to the audio.

100th episode

Every book we’ve ever talked about:

Yes, it’s our 100th episode! And we have a big announcement: the Books on the Nightstand Book Index is back up and running. Thanks to our long-suffering volunteer index webmaster Rob Webb, you can now search every book that has been talked about or mentioned at Books on the Nightstand. You can filter by category, sort by author or title, and you can click through directly to the relevant episode or blog post. It’s at the top of this page on the tab marked “Book Index.” Please check it out and give Rob a HUGE thank you for building this for us. He spent a lot of sweat and tears (and maybe blood, too, I really don’t know) to build this for us. THANK YOU, ROB!

I couldn’t wait to tell you about the very beautiful limited edition Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy Deluxe Boxed Set
that is coming out in the US on November 26th. This is the gift to put on your wishlist! Not only is it a gorgeous package of limited edition, full-cloth hardcovers (with maps and other cool stuff!) of the 3 books (do I have to tell you the titles, really?), there is also a fourth volume! On Stieg Larsson is a collection of previously unpublished essays about and correspondence with the author. You’re going to want this, trust me. Put it on your holiday list!

Every Hundredth Book! (11:45)

We used our new index to find every 100th book we talked about on the podcast. This is kind of random, and gives a good idea of the diverse kinds of books we talk about here. We had fun revisiting these books. If you want to use these as a Books on the Nightstand reading challenge, feel free to substitute Y The Last Man (graphic novel) in place of the La Cucina cookbook. Poor Michael didn’t have any graphic novels on this list, so he added one here.

Holes – Sachar, Louis
The Forever War – Fillkins, Dexter
I See You Everywhere – Glass, Julia
The Thing Around Your Neck – Adichie, Chimamanda Ngozi
Storm Front (Audiobook) – Butcher, Jim; narrated by Marsters, James
The Lost Symbol – Brown, Dan
Uglies – Westerfield, Scott
La Cucina - Academia Italiana Della Cucina
Thinking in Pictures – Grandin, Temple
American Music – Mendelsohn, Jane
To the End of the Land – Grossman, David

Our Finest Moments: (20:58)

And lastly, something that some of you have asked for: bloopers. Now you will see what we really go through to record these episodes. Enjoy!

Great show! I had so much fun listening to it, I think I was smiling the whole way through. And the bloopers were great. Thanks so much for sharing them. I was particularly reassured by Michael’s struggle, in one of the bloopers, to come up with a way to describe a particular book because I often have a hard time with this when writing reviews but you two make it seem so easy. Congratulations on your 100th episode!

    Ann & Michael,
    Congratulations on 100 episodes!
Looking forward to the next 100!
    Kathy

  • Suzanne (Chick with Books)

Congratulations on 100! Love you guys and can’t wait for the next 100!

  • Patricia Snyder

Whatever you two would have done for your 100th episode would have been great. Just achieving that number is outstanding. By the way, I very much appreciate the sound-quality of your broadcast. That is important when your voices are being channeled directly into my brain through my earbuds.

I don’t remember if it was mentioned about to the End of the Land, but its author David Grossman lost his 20-year-old son in the Israeli-Lebanon conflict.

Simcha, thanks! That blooper from Michael is something that happens to both of us far more often than it should be possible — and it’s the books that we love that seem the hardest to describe. Thanks so much for listening!

Thank you, Patricia. Interesting imagery, our voices being channeled into your brain …
I really do appreciate your comment about the sound quality. We have improved a lot since the beginning, though we are still far from having a professionally-produced sound.

This 100th episode was FANTASTIC! You two rock and Ann your laugh is infectious!

I think we all find it hard to describe our favorite books, we are too emotional and excited it makes us speechless(?) we want so much to tell others to read it, but find it hard to say why it is great. Thinking about certain titles now, I could describe books that are good, but may not be a favorite.

GO L.S.! Thanks for the laughs and look forward to 100 more!

Feliz 100th episode! You make my middle of the week day, special…Love each and every one the episodes!

  • Nadine Nys

Thanks for 100 great podcasts… I laughed so hard with the last blooper of Michael trying to thank us listeners that I woke up my husband who was sleeping next to me in bed and when he responded irritated my only reply was laughing even harder. In the end I had to get out of bed. But eventually I could explain to him why I was laughing so loud, and then we both could get to sleep.
I definitely am waiting for the next 100 episodes.
    Thanks to both of you

Thank you for the wonderful 100 podcasts that I have listened to. I don’t recall how I found you, but it has been a fun journey and I raise my glass for another 100. Look forward to listening to more and getting more book recommendations.

  • Jacqueline

Happy 100th! I can’t tell you how much I LOVE this podcast! Thanks for all you do, and I look forward to listening to (at least) 100 more!

Happy 100th Podcast Birthday Ann and Michael. WOW! It’s absolutely amazing. Your success
is well deserved. And I am so thankful. I can’t imagine my travels around town and my home
state without the pleasure of your company. Thanks for all the great book recommendations.
I spend an extraordinary amount of time wishing that I could read them all:-)

p.s. Our new book index is FANTASTIC! (Notice the word “our,” simply because I feel like
like we are one big happy family on BOTNS. Lots of warm fuzzies to Mr. Webb.

    Congrats again!
